Import situation
In 2023, the import value of flowers in China reached 27.15609 million US dollars, an increase of 37.3624 million US dollars year-on-year, with a growth rate of 15.95%. This is the first time that there has been an increase after a continuous decline for four years.
Among the 7 types of imported flowers, the import value of bulbs, fresh cut flowers, potted flowers (landscapes), and courtyard plants accounts for more than 90% of the total import value, of which bulbs and fresh cut flowers account for 83.18%.
The import value of seed balls increased by 23.1807 million US dollars year-on-year, with a growth rate of 16.63%, maintaining growth for three consecutive years; The import value of fresh cut flowers increased by 16.324 million US dollars year-on-year, with a growth rate of 34.76%, which is the largest increase in the past six years; The import value of potted flowers (landscapes) and courtyard plants decreased by $4.3273 million year-on-year, a decrease of 18.91%. This category has been declining for three consecutive years, and the proportion of import value has decreased from 29.37% in 2020 to 6.84%.

In 2023, a total of 22 provinces (regions, cities) in China imported flowers, and the top 10 provinces (regions, cities) in terms of import value had a total import value of 270306700 US dollars, accounting for 99.54%. Among them, the flower imports from Yunnan, Shanghai, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Beijing, and Jiangsu provinces (cities) all exceeded 10 million US dollars, totaling 259.9775 million US dollars, accounting for 95.73% of the total imports. In 2023, among the top 10 provinces (regions, cities) in terms of import volume, except for Zhejiang and Shandong, which saw a decrease in import volume, Yunnan, Shanghai, Beijing, and others all experienced varying degrees of growth. Among them, Yunnan’s import volume increased by 24.3453 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 29.08%; Chongqing grew by 614300 US dollars, entering the top 10 for the first time, a 25 fold increase from 2022.
In 2023, there were 57 countries (regions) that imported flowers, with 6 countries (regions) including Niger, Egypt, and Tunisia as new import sources. The number of import sources decreased by 8 countries (regions) including Madagascar, Mexico, and Serbia.
The top 10 countries (regions) that import flowers account for 91.23% of the total import volume. Among them, except for a decrease in the import volume of flowers from Japan, Thailand, and France, the import volume of other countries (regions) has increased, with South Africa, Colombia, Peru, the Netherlands, and Ecuador showing a significant increase.
In 2023, the import value of flowers from the Netherlands was 166.7910 million US dollars, accounting for 61.42% of China’s total flower imports, an increase of 31.2187 million US dollars compared to 2022, the largest increase in nearly six years. After a continuous decline of 4 and 5 years, the import volume of Ecuador and Vietnam increased significantly in 2023, with year-on-year growth rates of 22.64% and 49.83%, respectively.
Export situation
In 2023, China’s flower exports amounted to 438.3923 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 47.3227 million US dollars, a decrease of 9.74%, marking the first decline after six years of continuous growth.
China’s flower exports are mainly concentrated in four categories: potted flowers (landscape) and courtyard plants, fresh cut flowers, fresh cut branches (leaves), and seedlings, accounting for 94.20% of the total flower exports in 2023.
In 2023, the export value of 7 types of flowers has decreased to varying degrees, with moss lichens (-40.57%), dry cut flowers (-31.65%), and seedlings (-26.07%) showing a significant year-on-year decrease in export value.

In 2023, 28 provinces (regions, cities) in China will export flowers. The top 10 provinces (regions, cities) in terms of flower exports account for 96.78% of the total export volume. Among them, the four provinces of Guangdong, Yunnan, Fujian, and Zhejiang, which are major exporters of traditional flowers, have an export volume of 38003200 US dollars, accounting for 86.68% of China’s total flower exports.
Among the top 10 provinces (cities) in terms of exports, Chongqing, Anhui, Shanghai, and Fujian have maintained year-on-year growth in exports, while the other 6 provinces (cities) have experienced varying degrees of decline in exports, with Hebei (-57.37%), Jiangsu (-42.44%), and Shandong (-37.48%) experiencing significant declines.
In 2023, there were 119 destination countries (regions) for flower exports in China, including 25 new countries (regions) such as Albania, Libya, and Kyrgyzstan, and a decrease of 20 countries (regions) such as Lithuania, Estonia, and Barbados.
The top 10 destination countries (regions) in terms of export value account for 78.18% of China’s total flower exports. Among the export destination countries (regions) mentioned above, Thailand and India have maintained growth, while other countries (regions) have experienced varying degrees of decline.
